Sergio Hernandez joined the Tufts Lyme Disease Initiative in January 2023 as a Research Assistant. He completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Brock University in Canada. He is now a Ph.D. student at Tufts University working with Drs. Yi-Pin Lin and Klemen Strle. His work focuses on the comparative genomics of the major pathogenic Borrelia species that cause human Lyme disease. Sergio is also interested in elucidating host genetic determinants that lead to protective or pathogenic immune responses, more specifically how such responses shape the clinical course and outcome of the disease in patients. His research projects are geared towards understanding the immune mechanisms associated with protection from or susceptibility to Lyme disease and its manifestations in humans.
